Penreach Programs
"Penreach is a way of life for me. Penreach builds our confidence as professionals. We are role models for others. And our children are benefiting”.
Rayhab Sikhwari – Primary School Teacher of the Year
Pre-Primary School/ECD Program
This program works with pre-primary school educators / ECD practitioners. Every teacher who attends Penreach for the first time is expected to complete the general skills development workshop program. Here they learn the basics that many were never taught. After their first year, educators may then select a specialized learning area. Their choices are influenced by the fact that they may not have sufficient competencies in a particular learning area.
Primary School Program
This program works with foundation phase, junior primary school phase, and senior primary school phase educators. It focuses on improving the quality of teaching and learning in schools, particularly with regard to literacy, life skills and numeracy. Penreach also assists educators to improve their professionalism and classroom management; improvisation and development skills; and it empowers educators on issues related to the National Curriculum Statement in all learning areas.
High School Program
This program works with high school educators to develop and build their knowledge and skills with regard to the design of learning programs and their classroom methodology. Other development areas include research skills; planning assessments; closing the knowledge gap, time management, analyzing results. There is strong focus on Mathematics and Physical Science skills development in schools, supported by the recent addition of the Ndzalo Mobile Science Laboratory, which visits schools weekly, revolutionizing the teaching and learning of Physical Science.
School Governing Body Program
With this program Penreach is assisting schools to develop their management capabilities. The program includes training management staff members to draw up policies and apply them successfully e.g. disciplinary codes of conduct; school improvement plans; the role of SMTs in curriculum management and effective implementation; curriculum operational planning; training of staff, to name a few. Well managed schools are productive schools. Penreach is piloting a program called 'Principals Reaching Principals', involving the in-service coaching and mentoring of principals by a retired principal.
School Management Team Program
This program involves training School Governing Body members. It includes assisting parents/caregivers to become more involved in schools. The program helps parents/caregivers to understand the important role of the school principal and teacher. It shows SGBs how they can assist with resources to improve teaching and learning at their schools; support educators to perform their professional responsibilities; establish effective organizational structures and committees such as disciplinary committees; and inform parents, learners and educators of their rights and obligations. The program capacitates the new intake of SGB members to understand the roles required in good governance and leadership.
